I've been thinking about different techniques that i will be using to make my garments. And one that i keep coming back to is lace. I just feel that adding little bits of lace to my collection would be really nice. It will give it a delicate feminine touch.
Being a "textile designer" i have been looking into different types of lace making and wondering if i could make some pieces myself. I'm sure its going to be a challenge but i've decided to give tatting a shot.Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace constructed by a series of knots and loops. Tatting can be used to make lace edging as well as doilies, collars, and other decorative pieces. The lace is formed by a pattern of rings and chains formed from a series of cow hitch, or half-hitch knots, called double stitches, over a core thread. Gaps can be left between the stitches to form picots, which are used for practical construction as well as decorative effect.
Tatting dates to the early 19th century. The term for tatting in most European languages is derived from French frivolité, which refers to the purely decorative nature of the textiles produced by this technique. The technique was developed to imitate point lace. I have absolutely no experience but considering im reasonably good with my hands and there are some great video tutorials online i think i should manage.
I am now off to buy some tatting shuttles and crochet thread.
